Check out Allen Lacy's books on gardens. He's an old friend -- see pics of new baby Kate with a garden he planted for us in the background. His day job was always teaching philosophy, and he confessed that his wife Hella did the actual garden work. So his writings are *about* gardens rather than *doing* gardens. Quite lovely.
