Call for Papers
SPECIAL ISSUE (Spring 2007): DIASPORIC FUTURES: TRANSNATIONAL CULTURAL
STUDIES/ DIASPORA STUDIES IN CANADA.
Guest Editor: Jenny Burman, McGill University

Diaspora studies as a means of approaching the dislocation and mobility
of peoples comes in and out of fashion. Diasporas predate the
nation-state, and some believe they will outlive it. Meanwhile, they
have been entangled with the formation, the dream, and the
transformation of the modern nation-state. We have witnessed a
resurgence of interest in diaspora studies since the 1980s, as well as a
proliferation of research on transnational communities and
transmigration. Transnational cultural studies might be described as an
area that merges the theoretical advances of humanities-based
postcolonial studies with a reinvigorated socioeconomic analysis of the
predicaments of globalized spaces. In Canada, work in transnational and
diaspora studies deals with a set of circumstances made distinct by
official multiculturalism policy, and specific histories of racism and
practices of racialization.
This special issue of Topia will be of great interest to cultural
studies scholars and students based in Canada and abroad. It calls into
question how we traditionally discuss the Canadian nation-state, and
stages new engagements between urban, national, and transnational
spheres.
We welcome papers in, but not restricted to, the following research
areas:
-Locale-specific studies and/or theories of diasporization,
hybridization, creolization
-Oppositional movements that organize around questions of citizenship,
belonging and illegality
-Critical readings of the 2002 Immigration and Refugee Protection Act or
other government documents concerning citizenship, immigration, and
cultural difference
-Diasporic cultural production in Canada (film, visual arts, music,
performance).
