(6/30/06) Anthropology of News and Journalism
Call for Proposals: The Anthropology of News and Journalism
At the invitation of a University Press, I am putting together a proposal for an edited volume on the Anthropology of News and Journalism (exact title to be determined later). I am seeking contributions that discuss any aspect of this central theme. Primarily, I am looking for contributors who identify primarily as anthropologists, rather than members of other disciplines who use anthropological approaches, although there is definitely some flexibility there. Some areas of interest include (but are not limited to):
* Ethnography of news production - for instance, work with journalists and other news producers. Includes traditional forms of news (TV, newspapers, magazines), or new genres (blogs, message boards, local community initiatives etc.).
* Ethnography of news reception, again in traditional and newer contexts
* Analysis of news content, perhaps informed by sociolinguistic theory
* Anthropological discussions of what constitutes "news," and/or the functions of news in different cultural contexts
* Discussions of the connections between journalism and anthropology
* Representation of gender, ethnicity, and nation in news
* Indigenous news practices
* Analyses of visual representations in news
* Methodologies for studying news and journalism cross-culturally
* News and globalization
* Relevance of the study of news and journalism to applied anthropology
I am inviting the submission of abstracts (250-500) words in the first instance, although complete papers are also welcome. They may be sent by email or regular mail; please include a brief (2-3 sentence) bio.
Submit abstracts by June 30, 2006 to:
