CALL FOR PAPERS & PROPOSALS

6th Annual Global Fusion Conference

Nation, State, and Culture in the Age of Globalization

www.global-fusion.org

Chicago, Illinois

Friday, September 29-Sunday, October 1, 2006

Certain renderings of media globalization posit a disappearing nation-state superseded by global

corporate operations and global cultural practices and identities. Hybridity, cultural proximity,

glocalization, cultural imperialism, transnational media consolidation, and other concepts often dance

with the role of nation, state, or culture, but seldom consider their complex, material interactions. We are

left with important theoretical and practical questions: How have identifiable global media practices

transformed specific national identities and social interests? What is the role of the state in regulating or

deregulating media and cultural practices--and in whose interest does the nation-state function? Which

cultural practices exist within or transcend nations and their states? Whose interests predominate in

global media practices and how do these interests and practices represent the multiple nationalities,

nations, and cultures of the world? Other difficult questions arise as we try to comprehend, explain, and

develop real options for media and cultural practice in a rapidly changing world. The 6th Global Fusion

Conference focuses on these and other issues of nation, state, and culture in the age of globalization.

Global Fusion Conference brings together international scholars and professionals in mass

communication, journalism, media and cultural studies, comparative broadcasting, diplomacy,

transnational media, media economics, advertising, international law, and issues related to war and peace.

Endorsed by divisions of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication

(AEJMC), the International Communication Association (ICA), the Broadcast Education Association

(BEA), and the International Association of Mass Communication Research (IAMCR), Global Fusion is

sponsored by Ohio University, Purdue University Calumet, Southern Illinois University, and the

University of Texas.

Papers are invited on any subject addressing global communication and/or culture, with

preference given to those topics related to the conference theme. Papers may not exceed 30 typed doublespaced

pages (Times 12-pt), including references (APA style). Authors must include: 1) separate title

page, with institutional affiliation; 2) 150-200 word abstract; 3) 80-100 word bio; 4) complete contact info

and mailing address. Panel proposals must include: 1) 200-250 word abstract for panel; 2) 150-200 word

abstract for each presentation; 3) each panelist's name, institution, and complete contact information; 4)

proposed chair and respondent, if any. Recognition and awards are given for outstanding papers at the

conference. Top papers will be published in Global Media Journal, the official peer-reviewed journal of

Global Fusion.
