10-16-06 CULTURAL STUDIES ASSOCIATION
FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING of the CULTURAL STUDIES ASSOCIATION (U.S.)
hosted by the Portland Center for Cultural Studies
Portland, Oregon (Portland State University) April 19-21, 2007
Call for Papers - Celebrity Culture Division
Subcultural Celebrity: Subcultures have always been a central concern
for the field of
cultural studies. In many ways, celebrity, as a resolutely mainstream
formation, seems
tangential to this concern. Nevertheless, much of the work in the
subfield of celebrity cultural studies examines ways in which
subcultural group identities can be stitched to
celebrity culture. This panel will examine this nexus between
subculture and celebrity.
Literary Celebrity: Most studies of celebrity tend to focus on the major
industries of
music, cinema, television, and sport, in which enormous amounts of
capital and labor can
be invested in the formation of a celebrity career. Literary celebrity,
which tends to be
less capital and labor intensive, has received less attention. This
panel will examine the
ways in which literary celebrity may complicate our understanding of
fame as a product
of the culture industry.
